Frequently asked questions

How do I get an image onto my iPhone?
With AirDrop, from Mail or Messages (“Open in” → CryptDMG), through iCloud Drive, or in the app with “+” → “Import Image”. You can also just link large images (“Link Image in Files”) so they stay where they are.

Which formats does CryptDMG open?
Apple disk images: .dmg (compressed and read-only too), .sparseimage and .sparsebundle, encrypted with AES-128 or AES-256 or unencrypted, with APFS, Mac OS Extended (HFS+) or FAT. Also VeraCrypt-compatible volumes (open and create). Images up to 100 MB are free; a one-time in-app purchase unlocks larger ones in every format.

I forgot my password.
Unfortunately there is no way back: without the password the data cannot be decrypted, not even by us. That is the point of encryption.

How does “Remember with Face ID” work?
The password is stored in this device's keychain and released only after Face ID, Touch ID or the device passcode. It is not synced through iCloud. The device needs a passcode for this.

Can I change files in an image?
In images with a FAT file system, which includes every image created with CryptDMG, you can add, rename and delete files and photos. CryptDMG opens APFS and HFS+ volumes read-only.

How do I open an image made with CryptDMG on a Mac?
Double-click the .dmg file and enter the password. The image appears in the Finder like a USB drive.

Why are single files limited to 4 GB?
New images use the FAT32 file system so that every Mac and PC can read them. FAT32 allows files of just under 4 GB.

I have a new device. How do I get my purchases back?
Settings → Formats → “Restore Purchases”.

Where are decrypted files kept?
Only for previews and sharing, in a temporary folder of the app. They are deleted as soon as you lock the image or leave the app.
